What is RSS?

Much like the way a traditional news wire works, RSS (really simple syndication) delivers content you are interested in directly to you, allowing you to scan updates from websites you’ve selected, instead of having to go directly to these sites. It takes the hassle out of staying up to date by showing you the latest updates of all your favorite sites and blogs.

David Maister offers rss feeds of all of his blog entries. You can subcribe to all of David’s blog entries by choosing the global feed, or you can subscribe to the blog entries that match your interest by choosing one or several of the category feeds (clients, management, strategy and careers), and recieve the blog entries that are specific to your interest.

How do I use RSS?

First you will need to get a news reader. These are software programs that collect rss feeds and display the story information. There are many available readers. Do a search for rss reader and choose the one that works best for you.

Once you have a reader installed, you need to subscribe to a feed. Click on one of the rss links available from David’s blog page (the orange rss buttons). You’ll see a page with a bunch of code on it. Simply copy the URL that appears in the address bar, and paste this URL into the “Add New Channel” section of the RSS reader you’ve chosen. The RSS feed will now start to display and update regularly.
